We had a perfect day for nine chapter members to explore Robinson Hill Prairie in Peoria. We traversed over a mile through the woods, up and down steep ravines, to reach the open spaces of the hill prairie.  The hill prairie was in full summer bloom with yellow rosin weed, white boneset, and big bluestem. We saw lots of leadplant past bloom and rough blazing star just starting to bloom. This was just the first hill prairie. We continued down the trail to find a series of smaller hill prairies. Here we saw cream and white wild indigos, slender bush clover, and more boneset. The trail was lined with fragrant sumac, a low growing shrub.

The hike was led by Sam Stuber, volunteer steward at the hill prairie. Sam shared information about the park, the hill prairies, and his work to help preserve this Illinois Nature Preserve. The Peoria Park District has upcoming workdays at Robinson if you’d like to learn more about hill prairies and help preserve them.
